01 · Strategic Overview & Problem
The Challenge & Design Objective
The Core Friction
Mainstream digital media platforms relegate rich cultural and diaspora stories into generic blog layouts cluttered with programmatic advertising, diminishing the perceived value of independent artists' work.
The UX/UI Solution
Crafted a luxury editorial publication platform celebrating cultural depth through bespoke typographic pairings, generous negative space, inline audio features, and direct creator appreciation channels.
My Design & Architectural Responsibilities
Creative Technologist: Formulated editorial layout templates, typography rhythm scales, and reading progress state.
UI Designer: Selected culturally authentic color palettes (vermilion, warm parchment) and designed creator spotlight cards.
Performance Optimization: Implemented responsive image art direction and fluid font scaling.
02 · Target Audience & Empathy Mapping
User Persona & Behavioral Flow
Mei-Ling Zhao
Senior Arts Journalist & Diaspora Storyteller
“Cultural narratives deserve the reverence of a luxury coffee-table monograph, not disposable clickbait with screaming banner ads. Typography and pacing are everything.”
Critical Pain Points & Friction
- Generic Medium/Substack templates that strip away visual nuance and art direction
- Programmatic ads interrupting deep, emotional storytelling essays
- Lack of integrated audio player for oral histories and indigenous musical instruments
Core Goals & Desired Experience
- Immersive typographic reading experience pairing high-contrast display serif with serene body prose
- Seamless audio interview playback that follows the reader without blocking visual reading flow
- Direct creator micro-patronage and high-resolution visual portfolio showcasing
End-to-End User Journey Mapping
Phase 1 · Editorial Discovery & Cover ImmersionCurious & Absorbed
Reader lands on the cover edition; encounters full-bleed archival imagery, editorial subtitle, and estimated reading time.
Friction: Intrusive cookie banners and floating video popups on conventional publications.
UX Solution: Pristine, ad-free editorial cover with serene typography and subtle scroll indicator.
Phase 2 · Deep-Dive Reading & Oral History PlaybackMoved & Engaged
Reader scrolls through photographic essay, clicks audio snippet to hear the master craftsman speak in native dialect; sticky mini-player docks seamlessly.
Friction: Audio players opening new tabs and stopping playback upon scroll.
UX Solution: Non-blocking floating audio bar with persistent waveforms and synchronized caption cues.
Phase 3 · Creator Patronage & Story ArchivingConnected & Generous
At the conclusion of the story, reader explores artist biography card, sends a direct micro-patronage grant, and bookmarks the story into personal collection.
Friction: Disconnected donation links routing to external third-party pages.
UX Solution: 1-tap embedded micro-patronage drawer with personalized thank-you note from creator.

Layout Exploration
Low-Fidelity Architecture: Editorial Magazine Grid vs Cluttered Blogs
Explored magazine-style asymmetrical columns with generous whitespace to prevent cognitive fatigue.
Key Ergonomic Decisions:
Constrained paragraph measure to 68 characters (ch) for optimal ophthalmic reading cadence
Integrated pull quotes that float between visual breaks rather than interrupting reading flow
Aesthetic Execution
High-Fidelity Polish: Warm Rice Paper & Sumi Ink Aesthetic
Developed a high-contrast editorial identity honoring East and South Asian printing heritage.
Key Ergonomic Decisions:
Balanced deep sumi black text (#18181B) against warm rice paper (#FAF7F2) to eliminate screen glare
Refined vermilion ochre accents to direct gaze toward interactive audio and patronage actions
